GGG Vs Canelo: How the controversial score card could spell big trouble for judge Adlelaide Byrd

Judge Adelaide Byrd could find herself in serious trouble following her controversial scoring of the Gennady Golovkin Vs Canelo Alvarez match up over the weekend. Following intense criticism over her 118-110 scorecard, the NSAC have now decided to stand Byrd down from from all major events for the foreseeable future.

So what was it about the scoring by Byrd, that caused such a backlash on social media, it threatened to overshadow the whole event?

In what was an epic battle between the two of the world’s best boxers, many felt the match was a close one to score. However after 12 exciting rounds of back and forth action, the majority of pundits gave it to GGG by a whisker.

The main sticking point for many was how heavily the Nevada native scored the bout in Alvarez’s favour. Two other judges ringside scored the bout 115-113 and 114-114. Close by anyone’s estimations- While Byrd’ s 118-110 landslide to Alvarez was anything but a fair reflection of the fight. This bizarre result came as a shock, even to Alvarez’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya.

“A lot of people are not understanding 118-110, just like myself. That’s the bottom line,” said De La Hoya at the post-fight press conference.

Bob Bennett, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission also weighed in on the scoring of Byrd, who has a history of controversial scores in both MMA and boxing.

“I’m not going to put her right back in. She’ll still be in the business but she needs to catch her breath,” Bennett said.

“Like in any profession, you have a bad night. Unfortunately, she didn’t do well. I can tell you she conducts training for us, takes judges under her wing, but her score was too wide.”

While it may be a while before we see Byrd return for judging duties, we could see both GGG and Canelo return much sooner, after a public outcry at the result, and an overwhelming demand for the re-match to take place.
